The Carriage Of Lost Things

The Carriage Of Lost Things

From the Diary of an unknown adventurer…

I haven’t told anybody about this, as remembering it hurts my head…

Oh diary, oh why couldn’t  we have just walked away from this horrible thing, the memory of it leaves a hollow hole in the pit of my stomach and I cant get my companions face out of my head… his pale…empty… face.

My late companion and I were searching for the fabled “Golden Epel” for our dear lord Nelrissa The White. The lord ordered us to find this magic fruit by any means necessary. Apparently it was important but…I don’t know much about it. I just find things,  I don’t read about them or,  look into them. Anything besides their location anyway….

As we were traveling through the Forest Of Puppeted Plants, there was a clearing…I think it was a clearing anyway… and as we entered it suddenly music started playing all around us….oh the music…such calming music…. coming from everywhere around us…there was a carriage….yes…a  carriage I think. This carriage was in the middle of the clearing with a window on it, at first the window looked empty but as we approached it a strange old lady appeared in the window and I think she said “Hello Young Adventurer” to me..or was it to my companion…not that it really matters anymore. But that music, that music got louder,  though it didn’t feel like it was coming from the carriage. It was just coming from everywhere…such strange music…such a strange thing to describe to anyone who hasn’t heard it…

She faced towards me and asked “Are you looking for something lost young man?” as she leaned closer to me in a strange manner, I of course answered yes and explained to her what the Golden Epel looked like  and that we needed it for our lord…I also backed away a little…  She simply nodded her head and said “So you find things…I find things too, lost things, are you looking for something lost?” I of course answered yes, for it was lost in this very forest. She then…I think, though my memory is getting fuzzy as we speak…proceeded to say again that she “Finds lost things.”, and was “The Keeper Of Lost Things”, this struck me as strange, for though I had seen magic before and strange witches in the woods… I had never seen or heard of any magic like this. So I did what any foolish adventurer would and I asked her “Can you find me the Golden Epel” …she smiled for a moment…such a strange smile…as though her teeth were amber…so yellow…so strange…ugh ….my head. And she pulled out a Golden Epel, “Is this what you seek young man?”….I knew what it looked like from sketches and this was it. I was sure of it! I answered “Yes!” excitedly and I asked her if I could have it.,.I think…and she just smiled again..and said “I will need something as payment…something that is valuable, powerful…something that can not be truly lost..only taken or bled out”…I think I was confused at this point…and my companion chimed in…”We have gold..so do you want gold?” The lady simply chuckled…such a horrible chuckle…”No young rogue…i have no need for money.  People lose money all the time, I want blood, I want your blood!” and as I watched I heard a horrible noise…and the music…the music started fading…as my companion fell to the ground…pale…pale and dead…. and the item we sought… laying where the carriage used to be, the carriage gone. The lady gone…my companion…gone.

There is a blood stain on the diary here…

RLDR News

Hey guys its Michael, I wrote this story as a way to supplement my games lore, if you liked it, it would be awesome if you shared it I am by no means the greatest writer ever, but hopefully this story was at least entertaining and a bit dark, as it should be, magic is going well, I just finished most of the runes I needed for the first pass on the magic system, now I just need to come up with a way to and write the UI for players to apply these runes to items.

I think i’m going to do more of these supplemental lore stories if you folks like it. Let me know in the comments, follow me on twitter @Untrustedlife and keep playing roguelikes! (Hopefully eventually mine 😛 ).

What have I been up to? (Thrive edition!)

So recently , I have been putting work into thrive instead of my roguelike, there are many reasons, first of which is that thrive is starting to take off, which is good, and the roguelike is still rather obscure (to anyone not in the roguelike community).

The second reason being that since I am back to school, it is much easier to occasionally put work into thrive ( A team project, with goals, and a pretty mature codebase) then it is to put work into my solo developed roguelike (mostly because I have to do everything in it, its still early so I am doing a-lot of infrastructure stuff).

That doesn’t mean I am not working on the roguelike it just means i am putting more work into thrive relatively then I am into my roguelike.

For those of you who don’t know thrive is an open source evolution game which can very well be described as  “an attempt to create high impact scientific communication through play using Xenobiology as a setting” (Quote from one of the other developers)

Thrive has recently received some press coverage as well:

Though it has been a little while since I last contributed to Thrive’s codebase  I am back in and doing some coding work, my current project is allowing us to pass flags between game states for things like a free build editor, among other things.

The free build editor will be  a new “mode” where you can use an infinite number of mutation points to create whatever microbes you want. (though they wont carry over to the main game)

My previous project involved user interface tweaks and genus/species separation and name generation.

Just thought I would let you guys know what I have been up to.

Until next time.

The feel of the game

So, Roguelegends:Dark Realms (Or just Dark Realms, which is the short name) is a dark fantasy deterministic roguelike game.  A problem I have been having lately while working on it, is that it didn’t “feel” like a dark fantasy game, in terms of color scheme, so today I have been experimenting with different color schemes, hopefully this will be customizable later on in the games development.

When you are making a game that is supposed to “feel” a certain way even a roguelike color is a huge problem, if it is too bright and you are trying to have creepiness in the game it doesnt work. One game that does this really well is the game Frozen depths

It has a very “cold” looking color scheme that fits the game, alot of blue and “cold red” colors. in my case I am making a “dark , unsettling” fantasy game, so I need a color pallet that is a bit stranger and a bit darker. So I am thinking greens, blues and grays.

I found  a great website,

http://www.rapidtables.com/web/color/RGB_Color.htm

Which lets you test out color schemes, and get RGB values.

What I have come up with now is something that feels a little bit more unsettling.

Much better right?

This is much “darker” looking then the old color scheme, but it is subject to change, what do you guys think?

Next up is to make fire damage have a special ability like poison damage does, then add a deterministic dodging system, and perhaps a stealth system.

Spacebase hub

So, lately I’ve been putting a-lot of work into derelict game’s spacebase df9 unofficial patch when i’m not working on school things.

And those of you lucky enough to find this blog post and also be interested in space base df9 will be happy to hear that version 1.08 is coming soon. I myself have been rewriting how the weapon system is handled, and have also been working on maladies most of the time.

What are maladies? Well “maladies” are diseases, that is essentially what they are, though the game itself  has a much broader idea of what “Maladies” are they are essentially a superstructure used by the game to impose challenge on the player and alter the variables within the characters themselves, it handles everything from injuries to the plague to parasites and the “Thing”.

Among numerous other  (also big) things the patch features many new maladies and the removal of most of the df9 maladies, a minor injury system, and a weapons trade inside your base, people can now come to your base equipped with weapons, they will use these weapons to defend themselves from raiders and trade for items they like, they are also used to defend characters from the player if the player tries to, for example,  execute them for whatever reason, people also will use weapons when they tantrum, the result? A base where people are far less likely to be murdered by raiders, but also far more dangerous themselves, that should be fun.

I have also added many new weapons, and melee weapons are also now a thing. And it is very easy to add your own weapons and maladies now as-well.

A new post is coming soon, with tips for dealing with the new features.

School Starting Soon, and Unity.

School starts back up on Monday, which means I will no longer be posting as often, I will still try to post once a month, kind of like this.

I started using unity, did the rollaball tutorial and I can see myself using it in the future, Roguelegends: Dark Realms hasn’t seen much work done on it beyond what I have already posted, but its chugging along nicely. I added more enemy “types” and new effects creatures can have on them as-well. More on that, as usual, in time.

I am uploading another small project I did a long time ago to my downloads page, a Life Sim, that aims to simulate a very simple form of evolution. So that will be up soon. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Happy new years!

Wow, look at that, its 2016.

Happy New Years everyone!

——————————————————————-
What I’ve been up to this week has been just polishing some stuff I already added and adding a bit more variety. You can only equip one item of a certain type at a time now (so you can only have 1 sword instead of 20 equipped at a time) , before this you could just equip hundreds of swords at the same time, which was silly) This applies to all armor aswell, so only one “head” item only one “body” item only one “weapon” etc. I might add proper dual wielding some point though.

What is next?

Well what is coming next is either stealth (or distracting monsters) and more monster flags, or item generation, not sure which yet.

Equippables and rarities are working.

I have programmed in basic equippables , i do not randomly generate items yet (if you can’t tell by the armor named “test” armor)

I also do not do proper body covering calculations (right now they just grant defense bonuses to various attack types based on the piece and swords and stuff improve your power/attack based on the various elemental damage types.)

Eventually you will have to equip sets, eg a chestplate, helmet, armored pants, and shoes. And other stuff, like rings and amulets eventually.

CaptureDid i mention my game also has full mouse control?

You just click on items in your inventory and the action to do interactions.

You will also notice i can “consume” my fire sword, obviously horrible things happen when you try to swallow swords,  that just happened because of how I coded my inventory items, it can handle pretty much any interaction. Including using non-weapons as weapons if you so desire with proper debuffs.

Happy roguelikeing 🙂

I feel as though you guys deserve some screenshots… making up for my lack of updates for so long.

This is a shot of the Message [L]og
As you can see, randomly generated vermin creatures work quite well… they all have different effects from eating/throwing them, this particular one explodes in a blob of fantasy-acid and melts skin. When thrown, and it makes you feel “uncomfortable” when you pick it up there are tons of different kinds.
